Old Slave Mart Museum

A Place of Witness and Remembrance

A Dark Past Saved for the Future

The Old Slave Mart Museum occupies the last remaining structure of a private slave-trading complex that operated here in the years just before the Civil War. After outdoor auctions were banned in Charleston, enslaved men, women, and children were brought into this building to be inspected, bought, and sold. Today, the museum preserves that history and honors those who passed through its doors, encouraging reflection on the enduring legacy of slavery in Charleston and the United States.
