Charleston

Where Colonial American History Lives!

Completed in 1771, the Old Step inside the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, where the story of Charleston unfolds within its graceful halls and vaulted brick chambers. Built in 1771 as the city’s exchange and customs house, this landmark has witnessed revolution, celebration, and the steady growth of a nation. Visitors can explore the elegant Georgian architecture above and then descend into the historic dungeon below to experience the atmosphere of a turbulent past. The Old Exchange is more than a museum; it is a place where the endurance of the American spirit can still be felt, and where history continues to speak to all who enter.
